Friday, December 18, 2015…29th day in the hospital

BJ is still struggling with nerve pain in his feet. The lidocaine patches worked for a while and he was able to sleep for a few hours, but after the medicine wore off, his pain was back. The second set of patches didn’t work as well. He was visited by a pain specialist today, who interviewed him, looked at his history and will make recommendations on other ways to control his pain.

Over the past several weeks, BJ has had some blurry vision, and today, an eye doctor came to examine him. He has some blood in the back of both eyes. It is most likely from the times his platelet counts were extremely low. BJ was very alarmed by this, but the doctor said it wasn’t anything that needed to be corrected right now. He also said it was not caused by cancer in his eyes, and that it could resolve on it’s on with time. If it didn’t, he would need to have surgery to remove the blood. He also reassured BJ that this would not cause permanent damage to his eyes.

BJ’s oncologist also visited him today. It was the first time we had seen him since last Thursday. He told BJ that he didn’t expect him to respond to the chemotherapy like he did, and was very happy with his progress. It was definitely a different look on his face today, compared to last week. He didn’t give BJ much of a chance last week, but we pointed out that God had a different plan.

We continue to be very thankful and overwhelmed at the support from the Naval community who continue to reach out to their newest SEAL.

🙂 One of our favorite LCH nurses brought in her retired Navy SEAL husband’s backpack, that he carried over seas. He filled the backpack with cool things, too. Thank you Heather and Graham! Another retired Navy SEAL, with the LKN SEAL Swim and SEAL Swim Charities came by today with t-shirts for BJ from the The National Navy UDT SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, FL.
