Childhood Cancer . Childhood Leukemia
November 13, 2015 Day 1 of Inpatient at Duke Children’s Hospital
On November 14, 2015 by Michelle LoveBJ had to go back to clinic today for the daily labs. He was slow moving today, because his joints hurt when he moves. Walking hurts, pushing himself up from lying down hurts, chewing hurts. His doctor told us that it was most likely due to the crowding of leukemia in his bone marrow, pushing on the nerves, which causes the pain. Tylenol takes just the edge off, and allows him to tolerate what’s left. He had also been running a low temp Thursday night and into this morning. He just didn’t feel very good today. He is still very tired and doesn’t have much energy. He did sleep a little better last night, knowing that we now have a plan, but he needs more sleep.
When we received his labs, we just stared at each other and took a deep breath. His white blood cell count today was 56.2k, yet another jump from yesterday. Today, 95% are blasts. ((Out of 56,200 white blood cells, 53,390 are leukemia blasts.)) I told him it’s ok. We thought it would be even higher, we have to wait. He agreed, and we both took another deep breath. Due to the low temp, just to cover any infection that could be brewing, he was given a dose of antibiotic. His magnesium was low, so he was given an IV dose of that as well. He also received a liter of normal saline, just to help him stay hydrated.
We went back to the Ronald McDonald house, and BJ laid down and slept about an hour. When he woke up, he told me he really didn’t feel well. He felt very nauseated, weak and thought he had a fever. I checked, it was 103.5. I started packing bags, and called the clinic to notify them that we would be on our way. BJ asked me to make sure I packed his Trident and collection of challenge coins.
He was admitted to the hospital, and is back on IV fluids, and another IV antibiotic. This could be the cytokine release syndrome / cytokine “storm” that we were hoping for. Praying that it is, and that his body holds up under the strain.
