Tank-up

BJ had clinic early this morning to check blood counts. His hemoglobin was low (no surprise, due to his headache), and so was his platelet count. It makes for a very long day when he has to get a blood transfusion. Each time he needs blood, a sample of his blood is sent down to the lab for a ‘type and cross’. This process takes about an hour. The ‘typing and crossmatching’ is a lab process that makes sure the patient receiving the transfusion gets the correct type of blood. The transfusion itself takes between 3-4 hours, so it’s a lot of waiting. BJ keeps himself busy, either sleeping, playing a game, or catching up on the latest in US and World news and the Republican presidential race.
