Childhood Cancer . Childhood Leukemia
Today, BJ is halfway through an intense in-patient chemo infusion schedule that started yesterday evening. He’s getting high dose Ara-C, which infuses for 3 hours every 12 hours, for four doses. He was struggling in the early hours this morning with extreme nausea and chills.
The side effects on this medication are pretty rough. It will drop his blood counts significantly. That’s a good thing as far as the leukemia cells are concerned, but worrisome for BJ getting an infection that he wouldn’t be able to easily fight off. This drug partly excretes through the tears, so he gets eyedrops every 6 hours to protect his eyes.
The timing is also very specific with this round. At hour 42 and hour 90 after he starts the Ara-C, he will get another round of Erwinia shots. This schedule repeats next week as well. We just ask for continued prayers as he goes through this rough time that is supposed to prepare his body for the transplant. Prayers that these drugs will ravage and destroy the leukemia cells that are lurking in his body.
