Childhood Cancer . Childhood Leukemia . Life Instead
He caught the big one, just like he promised he would!
On July 15, 2015 by Michelle LoveIt’s been a very, very hard two weeks for BJ. While he was getting blood on Wednesday the 8th, he started experiencing slurred speech and weakness on his right side. The medical team flocked to him and the consensus was that this was not a reaction to the blood, but rather most likely due to the methotrexate that was injected into his spinal fluid on June 29, during his latest spinal tap. The 5-dollar word for this condition is Methotrexate-induced leukoencephalopathy. With every spinal tap he’s had in the past 3 years, he has received intrathecal methotrexate. He’s taken oral methotrexate daily during the past 2 years as well. There’s no indication why this happened now, but when the drug finally clears his body, he will regain normal function. He was admitted that night, and had an EEG and MRI which confirmed that the problems were related to the methotrexate toxicity. He seemed to make a full turnaround by Thursday morning, and we were able to be discharged. He even requested Bojangle’s on the way home.
Thursday evening, it happened again. He couldn’t move his whole right side. I called, and his doctor wanted us to go back to the hospital. We were able to get him to the car and drove back down Levine. He was directly admitted back to the floor and had another EEG, which again did not show any seizure activity. However, the neurologist and our oncology doctors put him on a seizure medication just to cover that possibility. The right sided issues resolved, and then it started on his left side. His heart rate would randomly spike as well. As strong as BJ is, this situation really got him down. He was very upset, overwhelmed, and just angry. He wanted to be up and able to do something. Even the toughest shed tears every now and then.
On Sunday, he finally showed improvement, and both sides were equal in strength, although he felt very weak. He was finally able to go home Monday. This time, he was asking to go FISHING! A very good friend of ours told him to come on over, and he went with the mission of catching a rumored 4-foot catfish in their pond…. Mission accomplished! It weighed in at 25 lbs! Just look at that smile
