September 13, 2013….One Year Survival

On September 13, 2013 by Michelle Love

It was a year ago today that I got that phone call that started this journey. Reflecting back today, I give all the credit to God, because he is the reason that we are where we are right now. He put people in our life well before last September, setting up our critical support system for this past year. Looking back, I can see how his hand has woven through my entire life. He has been an alive, empowering presence through it all. Strength comes from meeting adversity head-on…not letting it crush you, no matter what the side-line comments are, you push through, and you don’t listen to the negative, to the miserable spirit-breakers. You rely on, you trust, you have faith in the One who made you, the One who knows you, the One who loves you with an inconceivable love, and strength flourishes, because it comes directly from him. “In quietness and trust is your strength.” He is there with you in the light, and he is there with you in the dark. Every day, I trusted him to take BJ in his hands, and take care of him, and to be with Carly through her struggles too. With trusting came the strength, so I could keep it together for all of us. It was a daily struggle to give up all the worrying. In the dark, early hours one morning, he responded to me with a part of a song playing over and over in my head, with special lyrics…a message just for me. And there it was…that peace I needed to sleep. The thing is, I’m not special…Having a child with cancer doesn’t give you a special hot-line…Anyone can experience the peace that comes with faith and trust.

Life is getting back to normal these days. We’re getting settled back into the busy routine of life…work, school, football, gymnastics, homework…and I am thankful for all of it.

BJ is doing great. He had a spinal tap with chemo early on Friday, Sept 4, then we came home and he went to bed. By Saturday afternoon, he was feeling better. Saturday night, he PLAYED in his 8pm football game. He is just amazing. Everybody asks how he does it, and I just smile and shake my head…I don’t know. He just does. He gives his 100% in school and on the football field. He’s back to playfully torturing his sister, but I think we all missed that in a way. It’s just great to see that smile.
