Delayed Intensification…Still.
On May 17, 2013 by Michelle Love
Life as we live it these days has gotten in the way of updating BJ’s caring bridge, but I wanted to take the time I have today while we’re at the clinic and catch up on the journal.
This has been a rough phase for BJ. He finished up the first set of Erwinia shots for this phase on April 5th…even had to go into the hospital for shots on Good Friday (March 29th), which ended up being a 7-hour stay.
In between the first and second half of this phase, his treatment was delayed two weeks because his counts were too low. The delay has pushed his phase out longer than expected.
On May 3, he started off the 2nd half of Delayed Intensification with a spinal tap with intrathecal methotrexate and two additional chemo drugs (Cytoxan and Ara-C). He hates anesthesia. And it never gets easier – no matter how many times – to watch your child go under anesthesia. But then, none of this is easy. We ended up having a 15-hour day at the hospital so they could get everything done. Back on the schedule are the Ara-C chemo shots in his arms through the weekend that I am able to do at home.
On May 10, he had more anesthesia for another spinal tap with intrathecal methotrexate and Ara-C chemo infusion. And another weekend of Ara-C shots at home.
We’re at the clinic today (May 17)…headed for another very long day, for chemo and the start of another set of Erwinia shots in his legs again. His hemoglobin and platelet levels have dropped too low, so he’ll be getting a blood and platelet transfusion today too.
We’re always so thankful for people who give blood!
